  1. at least 3 years of college or combination college and direct experience, with specialization in one of the natural sciences
  2. experience working with children in an outdoor setting strongly desired
  3. strong customer service ethic and ability to interact well with people of all ages
  4. public speaking ability in an engaging style
  5. ability to develop and communicate basic historical and natural science facts of the site
  6. knowledge of regional natural history, forest ecology, and/or forest management a plus

Administers:                 Education programs and event support at the Cradle of Forestry
Purpose of Job:           To assist Cradle of Forestry Heritage Site staff and CFAIA Directors as needed.
Detailed Responsibilities: 
  1. Facilitate conservation education activities, indoors and outdoors.
  2. Create, plan and implement the Junior Forester summer nature series for young children, including hands-on outdoor activities and lessons.
  3. Help plan, promote, and implement special interpretive events at the Cradle of Forestry.
  4. Lead groups on trails as interpreter of trail stories, site history and mission, and as a guide to observing the surrounding forest and its dynamics.
  5. Create and offer thematic talks as a roving interpreter along the Cradle’s trails.
  6. Work on special projects contributing to new group activities and/or public programs.
  7. Assist with caring for, interpreting, and engaging visitors in the Cradle’s Heritage Gardens as well as the plants, reptiles, and amphibians in the Cradle’s terrarium exhibit.
Training: provided on interpretive techniques, conservation education fundamentals, and the Cradle of Forestry site, programs, and management. On-job training opportunities include the natural and cultural history of the area, visitor center operation, and teaching children in an informal setting.

Lodging: Housing and other amenities will be provided at the Cradle of Forestry.

Compensation: Stipend of $125 per week for each position is paid by the Cradle of Forestry in America Interpretive Association. Internship requires a 40 hour per week commitment.
