Qualifications:
  1. Graduation from a four-year college and at least 5 years’ experience in designing and implementing environmental education programs, tours and workshops to various ages in a classroom or nature center/nature preserve or similar setting.
  2. Marketing and website development experience pertaining to environmental education.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience giving presentations to large groups and peers using Power Point or online meeting management tools.
  4. Basic knowledge of budgeting and finance structuring. 
  5. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel and PowerPoint applications.
  6. Ability to work closely with the Director of Education and CFAIA staff while working independently to further the mission of the CFAIA.
  7. Overall knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Southern Appalachians, Piedmont and regional ecosystems.   General knowledge of forest management concepts.  
  8. Ability to work weekends, holidays and after-hours as needed.
  9. Able to provide personal transportation.

Purpose of Job:  To ensure the education mission of the CFAIA by administering educational opportunities through the CFAIA to the general public and beyond.  To create awareness of the natural world, National Forests and other public lands through outreach, hikes, The Pisgah Field School, partnerships with local agencies and individuals and updated information in CFAIA campgrounds and recreation areas.


Detailed Responsibilities 

 

Programming Presence

  • Serve as Co-Director for The Pisgah Field School, which includes conducting tours, budgeting, marketing and strategic planning for each PFS season.
  • Provide support and guidance for Education Specialists in nine campgrounds over a three-state area and assist Director of Education in hiring and training of Education Specialists.
  • Explore potential for environmental education outreach at local schools and beyond.
  • Programming in campgrounds and Cradle of Forestry as needed.

 

CFAIA Presence

  • Coordination with Education Staff on design and updates for information boards in all CFAIA/Forest Service Campgrounds.  This includes posting new information and working with campground staff to ensure boards are orderly and information is accurate.
  • Create a CFAIA presence at festivals, workshops or other public event opportunities when possible.
  • Provide support to CFAIA staff, volunteers, hosts, etc. as needed.
  • Outreach about programming through local workshops, business meetings and other public opportunities.
 
Cradle of Forestry Presence
  • Update old exhibits and signage to coincide with Cradle of Forestry themes.
  • Assist in programming and special event days with Cradle of Forestry Staff.
  • Assist in marketing efforts for other organizations to utilize the Cradle meeting spaces.
 
Other/As-Needed Presence
  • Website updates, optimization and restructuring.
  • Offering assistance to CFAIA, Campground and Cradle of Forestry staff when needed.  This may include office work, logistics, programming or marketing.
